Alaska - 38th IAMSLIC conference

The 38th IAMSLIC conference took place in Anchorage, Alaska. Anchorage university was the host. Anchorage is Alaska's largest city and constitutes more than 40 percent of the state's total population.

 This meeting gathered 60 persons, most of them were from USA , only six from Europe. The meeting was very interesting, divaded in several sessions.


·         Session 1: Innovations in Instruction
In the session one there were two interesting presentations.
Interactive game named « Gaming against plagiarism ». was presented. The purpose of game is to raise awareness of plagiarism, and falsification of data. With a two year National Science Foundation grant the authors created an online, interactive game that provides a role playing environment in which graduate students learn to recognize and avoid plagiarism so they may function effectively and ethically as authors within multi national research teams.

The second one was the workshop about QR codes. Quick responses “QR codes” are two dimensional matrix symbols that can be created easlily and scanned by the camera feature of various mobile devices. These codes yield point of use text, URL or location information.  This workshop explain how create QR codes

·         Session 2: Changing Roles for Libraries
Changing roles of libraries was shown on the example of ORI Library. Botswana.

·         Session 3: Databases and Discovery
Can Google sholar replace ASFA the librarins were able to find out in Janet Webster’s presentation. Although more results are obtained by google scholar not all of them are relevant. The value of the databeses are in cover and search precision but how convince users of that ?
On the round table On the wild frontier of discovery, were discussed discovery tools and services, federated search, specific databes and their overlap.

·         Session 4: Data Management
In data management session were presented Biodiversity library heritage and WHOAS archive, as well as Bio directorate at the National Science foundation. IODE has Panel discussion on Data Citation

·         Session 6: Sponsor Presentations
Thomson ISI and ORCID gave insight into their services

·         Session 7: Green Flash
Green Flash intoduce OpenDoar and Toxmap.

·         Session 8: Repositories and Digital Preservation
ASFA/Aquatic commons Panel discussion conversion and mapping tools were presented.
